Big hui can mean big piles of waste, but marae around the country are trying to minimise the impact their gatherings have on the environment.
Strategies and philosophies around recycling waste will be shared at the annual Para Kore hui at Parihaka Pa at the end of the month.
Para Kore Taranaki waste advisor Emily Bailey says more than 170 marae nationwide are now on board with the kaupapa.
She says in her own rohe it has meant a lot of small steps and behaviour changes leading to different ways of doing things.
"There was quite a bit of recycling going on and feeding the pigs. We stepped that up by setting up our maara with compost bins and trying to stop the burning waste and changing what we buy, not so much packaged food or at least get it in recyclable containers. It's an on going thing everytime new whanau come in they need to learn about parakore," Ms Bailey says.
