Nga Aho Whakaari celebrates screen achievers
Maori in screen and television have celebrated their craft and laid a foundation for getting more stories made.
At this weekend’s inaugural Nga Aho Whakaari Maori Screen Awards, Taika Waititi received the Super Hero Award for taking Maori film to the universe and beyond.
Fred Renata picked up an award for inspirational creativity on screen, Briar Grace-Smith was acknowledged for her tenacity and strength in bringing Maori stories to the screen, and Derek Fox won the tohu for contribution to te reo Maori and the development of the Maori screen industry.
Kim Webby, Christina Milligan and Roger Grant got an award for contributing to peace and aroha with their film Price of Peace.
Cinco Cine was tipped for its contribution to capacity building and bringing in new talent, and Dick Reade won the treaty partnership award for his unerring support and discerning ears.
The NZ Film Commission announced the 2017 Ramai Hayward Scholarship – a $50,000 fund to help two Maori women directors develop feature film projects over the coming year.
