Soldiers’ bodies could come home
The Government has responded to pressure to bring back the bodies of soliders killed in Malaysia and Vietnam
Veterans’ Affairs Minister Craig Foss has asked the Veterans’ Advisory Board for advice on whether to change the long standing policy of not repatriating the bodies of military personnel who died while serving overseas between 1948 and1970.
The board will consider the wishes of the next of kin, tikanga Maori as well as the culture of the countries in which the service personnel are buried, the logistics of repatriation and any foreign policy implications.
It will also look at what it can learn from Australia’s decision this year to repatriate some of its service personnel from Malaysia and Singapore.
Two more members will be appointed to the board to help deal with the workload.
