Love sentencing delayed
A bid to keep former Wellington Tenths Trust chair Sir Ngatata Love out of jail means his sentencing on fraud charges has been delayed until Friday afternoon.
In the High Court at Wellington this morning, Justice Graham Lang said because a report on the healthcare the 78-year-old could get in prison was not given to his lawyers until 10 minutes before the hearing started, he would give them more time to study it and get advice.
The former Te Puni Kokiri chief executive and Victoria University emeritus professor was found guilty last month of obtaining a payment from a developer who wanted to use trust land near parliament.
The money was used to buy a Plimmerton beachfront house for Love and his partner Lorraine Skiffington, whose trial on the same charges has been stayed because of her health.
The court is hearing submissions from character witnesses, including former Secretary for Maori Affairs Kara Puketapu.
