Taranaki protection wins sponsors
A $24 million iwi-backed plan to restore wildlife habitat to Taranaki mounga and the offshore islands has secured new strategic investors.
Shell New Zealand, TSB Community Trust, Jasmine Social Investments and Landcare Research will signed up as founding sponsors in Taranaki Mounga, which was founded by Taranaki iwi chairs, the Department of Conservation and the NEXT Foundation.
Taranaki Mounga chair Jamie Tuuta says it’s a great example of a collaboration between iwi, corporates, philanthropists, the community and government.
Landcare Research general manager Justine Daw says it’s a chance for the Crown Research Institute to put its research into nature restoration and pest management to use.
The first goal of the project is to eradicate goats from the Egmont National Park, followed by the reintroduction of native robins.
