Quota change to protect South Island tuna
The co-governors of Te Waihora / Lake Ellesmere have welcomed the government’s decision to manage South Island eels as separate longfin and shortfin stocks.
Sir Mark Solomon from Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, says it would help protect the vulnerable longfin tuna, an important mahinga kai species in the lake, and supported current preservation efforts.
Since 2006 there has been a voluntary code of conduct for all longfin eel caught in Te Waihora to be returned to the lake.
Te Waihora is governed jointly by the iwi and regional and local government.
