As an indigenous woman, Marama understands the complexity of colonisation on cultural identity and the embedded unacknowledged injustice that comes with it. Her dignity and courage to embark upon such activism is a rare trait in a politician and deserves our attention.
We like to complain about politicians whose lives seem very removed from the realities and brutalities of life, so when one is prepared to step outside that bubble to represent, we should celebrate it.
No one believes an all woman crew on a boat can end the appalling occupation of Palestine, but by engaging in such activism, they force us to acknowledge the occupation exists and has not ended.
We must strive to force a two state solution with the same intensity as we did with boycotting apartheid South Africa, but to do that we need leaders with real leadership vision.
