A petition was handed over to Green MP Gareth Hughes from Ngati Ruanui iwi member stating the people around Patea and South Taranaki oppose mining in their rohe.
Back in 2014 the EPA refused mining consent to Trans Tasman Resources Ltd who were eyeing up the iron sands in South Taranaki.
The EPA have now accepted a new application by Trans Tasman Resources for consents to mine the seabed for ironsand.
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is calling for submissions on a Trans-Tasman Resources Limited (TTRL) application for marine consents and marine discharge consents for activities associated with extracting and processing iron sand in the South Taranaki Bight.
The public have 20 working days to submit.
The application area covers 65.7 square kilometres of seabed 22-36 kilometres offshore, in waters between 20m and 42m deep.
Debbie Ngarewa Packer talks with Willie Jackson about this kaupapa and the possibility of Mrs Packer representing the Maori Party as candidate for Te Taihauaauru.
