Bridge from Maori to mainstream aim of agribusiness stream
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell has endorsed Massey University’s new Maori agribusiness major, which is offered as part of its Bachelor of AgriCommerce.
He says there is a need for people who can connect current Maori agribusiness leaders to the wider industry.
That will help Maori get the best value from their land and resources.
According to Statistics New Zealand, goods exported by Maori-owned businesses in March 2014 were worth $543 million, up more than $100 million from the previous year, representing 1.1 per cent of total exports.
Qualification director Nick Roskruge says the major aims to produce graduates with the core skills of an agribusiness graduate as well as the cultural information to help organisations collaborate with Maori.
He says it’s not just for Maori students, but any student willing to learn.
