A group fighting a major housing development at Ihumatao has placed a massive tohu whenua on the land near Auckland Airport.

Save Our Unique Landscapes member Waimarie McFarland says the hapu has been fighting for the land for more than 150 years, and Sunday's protest was other part of the struggle.

More than 200 supporters joined with SOUL to erect a massive land marker of concrete blocks outlining the outer walls of a whare, which was then painted with images of the land and its guardians.

A pohutukawa pou whenua was also erected to symbolize the presence of mana whenua on the land over the past 800 years.

Mangere MP Su’a William Sio told the gathering the government, Auckland Council and Fletcher development have ignored the community  and they have no choice but to heighten its peaceful protest.
