No trust for tobacco giant’s e-cigs
A Maori anti-smoking advocate is skeptical about claims by a tobacco giant it is developing a lower risk alternative to conventional cigarettes.
Phillip Morris International has released what it calls a Reduced-Risk Product Scientific Update summarising its research efforts on alternatives such as vaping.
Zoe Hawke from Hapai Te Hauora says it's a hard to believe good intentions from the tobacco multinational.
"I mean there is a whole movement around e-cigarettes but the view of Hapai Maori public health is we would rather support those little independent e-cigar shops that are not connected to the tobacco industry, far more trustworthy than an industry that has built its wealth and brand on killing our whanau," she says.
Ms Hawke says past tobacco industry research has come up with false claims such as, filters that make their products safer.
