Ngai Tahu adds beekeping to farm training programme
Ngai Tahu’s Whenua Kura training initiative has added beekeeping to its farming and land-based programmes.
Director Renata Hakiwai says given the importance of pollination to the primary sector, graduates of the certificate in apiculture will be highly employable.
There are also opportunities for Maori in the beef, sheep, dairy, and horticulture sectors.
The iwi expects to produce about 300 Whenua Kura students who will graduate to employment in the farming sector over the next five to eight years.
Whenua Kura is an iwi-led partnership between Ngai Tahu, Te Tapuae o Rehua, Ngai Tahu Farming and Lincoln University.
Applications are now open for certificate and diploma courses starting in February 2017.
