Te Hiku o Te Ika Iwi Development Trust has secured $320,000 to restore two Far North dune lakes and a wetland.

Lake Wahakari, the Waiparera Wetland and the Rotoroa/Split lakes are all of ecological significance and are at risk from various land use activities.

The money comes from the $5 million Te Mana o Te Wai Fund, which the Maori Party had included in Budget 2014.

Additional fundng will come from Reconnecting Northland.

Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says tangata whenua are in a strong position to help protect and improve the water quality of the area’s dune lakes and wetland.
