Date for NZ Wars commemoration to be set
The challenge is on for iwi leaders to agree on a date to commemorate those killed in the New Zealand wars of the 19th century.
Deputy Prime Minister Bill English says the Government has agreed on an official day, even though it will not be a public holiday.
During a ceremony in Ngaruawahia on Friday to give Waikato Tainui the title to the Rangiriri battle site, he said the Land Wars were a neglected part of the country’s history, and there was an obligation to tell the full story.
The decision was welcomed by Otorohanga College student Leah Bell who was one of a group that in December delivered a petition to parliament calling for a national day.
