Rio gold confirms Carrington class
Maori Sports Awards organiser Dick Garrett says canoeist Lisa Carrington has proved herself one of New Zealander’s greatest Olympians.
Carrington, from Aitanga a Mahaki and Ngati Porou this morning won gold at Rio in the K1 200 metres, the same event she won in London four years ago.
Tomorrow she starts heats for the K1-500 metre competition.
Mr Garrett says Carrington, who won the Maori Sports Awards supreme award last year, is a great role model for her behaviour and determination on and off the water.
"This lady’s remarkable because she covers a lot of what New Zealand is about. She has a Maori father, a Pakeha mother, they are both school teachers and both clean-living, outstanding parents so she has been given that start in life and she has carried that mantle on to become one of the greatest Olympians," he says.
Nominations are now open for this year’s Maori Sports Awards.
