No Maori housing under Unitary Plan
The chief executive of the National Urban Maori Authority says the Auckland Unitary Plan won’t help Maori in the city find affordable accommodation.
Auckland Council yesterday signed off on the massive set of rules for the city’s development, including scrapping any requirement for large housing developments to include a percentage of affordable dwellings.
Lance Norman says as it was, the 10 percent affordability in the legislation for special housing areas has proved too low and a ratio like 40 percent is what would be needed to make a real impact on social housing.
That’s even before the government’s sleight of hand with the available land is factored in, such as the Moire Rd blocks in Massey.
"Both those pieces of land were earmarked for Housing New Zealand state house development. Now only 10 percent of those hosues will go into affordable into state or affordable housing, 90 percent into publicly available housing, so clearly we have downscaled the investment strategy into state or affordable housing," Mr Norman says.
