Council privilege a Pakeha issue
Outgoing mayor Andrew Judd agrees with a Whanganui local government candidate that there’s too much race-based politics but he says the man has it back to front.
Ian Brougham, a retired painter and decorator, is standing for council to get rid of all iwi consultation which he says is preferential treatment and costs council $150,000 a year.
He would also put the council through the cost of a referendum on whether the h should again be dropped from the spelling of Whanganui.
Mr Judd says they’re positions he may have held in the past, until he became mayor and did some basis research into how the system works.
"It’s race based for the benefit of Pakeha because it's designed by Pakeha for Pakeha. Nowhere in that system does it allow for the treaty, which is what our ancestors signed up to. If we are going to put an end to anything that is race based, let's put an end to the Pakeha-biased system that has always controlled us," he says.
Mr Judd says even though he’s not standing for office again, he is keen to keep working with Pakeha on treaty issues.
