Australian detention policy routine cruelty
Labour’s corrections spokesperson is still waiting for the Government to move on Australia’s shocking treatment of refugees and detainees.
More than 2000 incident reports from the refugee detention centre on Nauru have been leaked, including hundred multiple cases of physical and sexual abuse and self harm of children.
Amnesty International says it confirms what it and Human Rights Watch observed during a visit to the Pacific island, and lays bare a system of routine dysfunction and cruelty that is dizzying in and utterly damning for Australian authorities.
Kelvin Davis says a source on Christmas Island has told him there are similar problems among the hundreds of New Zealanders picked up under Australia’s tough new visa rules.
"He says the place is full to capacity now, all with Maori and Pacific islanders, so it is something our conscience tells us we have to address," he says.
