A cheap trick that short changes the country’s children.

That’s the reaction of Labour leader Andrew Little to National’s plans for a new funding system for schools.

Mr Little says the idea of giving each school a global sum to split as they see best is a repeat, of the bulk funding of the 1990's that proved unworkable.

It comes on top of a freeze in school funding in the last budget.

"It’s a cheap trick to then say we will hand over all responsibility to schools and school management and if anything does wrong, it;s their fault. It's an abdication of responsibility by the Government. That's why we don't support it Our whole ethos is having an education system nation wide where children who go through are getting the best teaching available to them," Mr Little, says.
