Maori lens sparks China interest
An exhibition by 12 Maori and Pasifika photographers is on its way to the giant Pingyao International Photography Festival in China.
Ata Te Tangata curator Rosanna Raymond says organisers specifically asked for Maori and Pacific representation.
She says the people and landscape of the Pacific have been viewed and constructed by the lens of the West since first contact, so Ata Te Tangata is a chance to redefines the gaze.
She says the 80 images tell a multitude of stories about a contemporary Polynesian experience unique to Aotearoa New Zealand.
The photographers include Lisa Reihana, who is representing New Zealand at next year’s Venice Biennale, Natalie Robertson, Grant Apiata and Russ Flatt.
The show will also be part of next year’s Auckland Festival of Photography.
