Covenant shifts responsibility for action
Green MP Marama Davidson is welcoming the creation of a Children’s Covenant committing to protect children from violence, abuse and neglect.
The convenant, drawn up by long-serving district court Judge Carolyn Henwood, Sir Mark Solomon and others, has been endorsed by the Greens, Labour, United Future and the Iwi Chairs Forum.
It includes a commitment to support children’s wellbeing and provide education.
Ms Davidson says it’s a way to ensure everyone has accountability for what happens to tamariki.
"Violence breeds in situations where we haven't created strong communities, where people aren't in good jobs, where people are living in homes that are substandard, where we are disconnected from our support systems and so I support the covenant for not just making a good clear statement to keep our tamariki safe but for acknowledging the systemic structures that are needed to do that," she says.
