Taitokerau vital for Mana future
Mana leader Hone Harawira has come out of his party’s annual conference confident he has a shot at retaking the seat he lost in 2014.
While talks with the Maori Party about a strategic alliance not to stand against each other in some seats is still at an early stage, he says both sides agree the seven Maori seats should be in the hands of parties driven by kaupapa Maori.
He says his desire to regain Te Taitokerau isn’t a reflection on the performance of the sitting MP, Labour’s Kelvin Davis.
"You know I don’t intend fighting with Kelvin (Davis) to get back in. I intend taking Mana back to parliament. I think that he'll be high enough up on the list. If going back to parliament means that I have to win the Taitokerau seat then that's what I'm going to be doing, but not because of anything about Kelvin, it's because of Mana, it's because of te pani me te rawa kore and the fact that so many of our people over the years things have gotten even worse," says Hone Harawira.
