Rotorua Lakes Council has won the Local Government New Zealand Awards judges' choice awards for its partnership with Te Arawa.
The tohu acknowledges the outstanding service and value created through its new arrangement that gives the iwi the responsibility of choosing representatives to be appointed to key council committees.
Judges said the partnership represented a step change in council/iwi relationships which will influence the way other councils operate.
LGNZ president Lawrence Yule said it showed an innovative approach to community consultation and engagement.
