Maori showbands recognised for entertaining troops
Recognition today for the work Maori showband members did entertaining New Zealand and other troops during the Vietnam War.
Six musicians and the family members of seven others now deceased or unwell received the New Zealand General Service Medal 1992 with clasp Vietnam and the New Zealand Operational Service Medal from Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae at a ceremony at Government House in Auckland.
The initiative resulted from an inquiry by former Maori Volcanics member Selwyn Rawiri, who has since died.
The Volcanics, Quin Tikis, T-Kiwis, and Hi Marks were among the showbands that performed in Vietnam between 1965 and 1972, along with other New Zealand entertainers like Dinah Lee and the Sheratons.
