Councils share knowledge on wai

Water will be the main topic of discussion at a conference for Maori leaders and decision makers hosted jointly next week by the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regional councils.
Kataraina O’Brien, Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s strategic engagement manager, says the Te Oniao hui is a koha back to those Maori communities that continually assist council in its mahi.
Speakers include Tamati Kruger from Tuhoe, Professor Linda Te Aho from Ngati Koroki Kahukura and her brother, Waikato-Tainui executive chair Rahui Papa, Taurtanga lawyer and Ngati Whatua board member Lara Burkhardt, and others.
There will be workshops on the health of tuna in the Rangitaiki River, the council’s Matauranga Maori Framework project, Maori hearing commissioners, Maori land potential, fresh water management and iwi resource management plans.
Te Oniao will be held at the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre on July 21 and 22.
