MEDIA RELEASE
Ngati Whatua Orakei appoints woman tribal member to CE role
Ngati Whatua Orakei's social development company, Whai Maia, has appointed Rangimarie Hunia, a Ngati Whatua Orakei woman as CE. Whai Maia is responsible for the well-being of its 2600 tribal members and focuses on education, health, employment and environmental areas. It has 155 staff and a revenue of $25 Million.
Rangimarie has previously been a director of the Ngati Whatua Orakei Trust, which has assets of around $675 Million, and a director on Whai Rawa, the trust's commercial property investment company. She is a director of Te Ohu Kai Moana, the Maori pan-tribal fisheries company and is also on the Commercial Board of the Institute of Directors. Rangimarie has broad experience across the commercial, environmental, education and social enterprise sectors
The Whai Maia Board Chair Wayne Pihema says the board is extremely pleased to have someone of Rangimarie's calibre appointed to the challenging role and even more pleased that she is a tribal member.
"We see her appointment as part of the Ngati Whatua Orakei Trust's strategy of enabling our people to soar. Rangimarie is an extremely skilled woman and we look forward to her leadership creating many valuable opportunities for our people to move forward in many areas."
Her appointment continues Whai Maia's record of pushing back against international trends that overwhelmingly see the appointment of males in senior management and governance roles. Whai Maia has women in half of its' senior management roles and three-quarters of its' governance board are women. Rangimarie, who starts today, takes over from Tupara Morrison who departed in February. The board acknowledges the strong contribution of Jamie Sinclair who has been Acting CE since February.
