Next step for river protection effort

Iwi, environment and recreational organisations are welcoming the Environment Minister’s decision to ask a special tribunal to consider their application for a Water Conservation Order over the Ngaruroro and Clive Rivers in Hawke’s Bay.
Ngati Hori ki Kohupatiki, Fish & Game, Forest & Bird, Whitewater NZ and Jet Boating NZ applied last December for the order, which will give the rivers the equivalent of national park-type protection.
The iwi says the Ngaruroro, which rises high in the Kaimanawa Ranges and emerges onto the Heretaunga plains at Whanawhana before flowing into the Pacific Ocean at Clive, was culturally important.
It is backing the application because it strengthens its efforts to restore the waterway’s mana and mauri.
