Cathy Dewes picked for Te Matawai

Te Arawa has appointed educationalist as its representative on Te Matawai, the new body that will develop a Maori strategy to revitalise te reo Maori.
She joins another prominent Te Arawa reo advocate, Scotty Morrison, who was selected for the board by iwi radio umbrella group Te Whakaruruhau.
Ms Dewes, who is of Ngati Rangitihi and Ngati Porou descent, was awarded an honorary doctorate by Waikato University for her contributions, including setting up one of the first kura kaupapa Maori and developing and implementing the Aho Matua learning framework.
The appointment means she will get a say in who goes on the board of Maori Television, just weeks after she herself was replaced as a member of that board.
