Philosophy behind play revealed

Traditional Maori games and the philosophies behind them are the subject of a new book to be published next week.
Author Harko Brown says Nga Taonga II – The Matrix is the result of a lifetime of listening, collecting and playing the games.
As well as kiorahi, the book covers more than 50 games and pastimes, as well as suggestions how they can be used to develop and mentor young people.
Mr Brown says the most important chapter is at the start, where he lays out 10 protocols for play.
"Things like manu korihi and petere, how they used to be played, those are the social matrices that kept everything together, the glue. I thought it would be good to put that in and have some of the korero from our kaumatua and kuia for the matrices that made everything work, and hopefully that adds to a bit of sustainability with the kaupapa," he says.
Nga Taonga II will be launched next Monday at the annual Physical Education New Zealand conference in Palmerston North.
