Recognition on agenda for new MP
Congratulations across the Tasman from one indigenous woman MP to another.
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall says the election of Linda Burney to the federal parliament in the Sydney inner-west seat of Barton is a cause for celebration.
Ms Burney, who was elected to the New South Wales state parliament in 2003, is the first indigenous woman elected to the federal parliament.
Ms Wall says she’s expected to work closely with another indigenous Labour politician, Northern Territory senator Nova Peris.
"I know that for both of them one of their main kaupapa is the Recognise campaign. This is constitutional recognition of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders within Australia's constitution. Now Linda has a legitimate platform to be that national advocate for that Recognise campaign," she says.
