Kahungunu seeking viabilty of fish potential

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is backing a joint initiative with Ngati Kahungunu and the Ministry for Primary Industries to look at the state of the region’s coastal marine environment.
A report presented to the council yesterday summarises available information on marine habitats in the Hawke’s Bay coastal marine environment drawing on scientific, anecdotal and customary sources.
Resource management group manager Iain Maxwell says there are major gaps in knowledge about what’s out there, and that affects council’s ability to identify and maintain biodiversity.
The report also highlighted the need to integrate freshwater and land issues into any research or future work in the coastal marine environment.
The partnership will now set research priorities and seek funding.
