Matariki music a marae celebration
The songs of the late Hirini Melbourne are providing inspiration for a younger generation of Maori musicians, who are sharing his music and their own waiata on Auckland marae over the next week.
He Huinga Whetu is made up of graduates of Toi Maori Aotearoa’s, Pao Pao Pao music programme.
Coordinator Ngatapa Black says the Matariki on the Move event is proving a great way to showcase talent.
"The exciting thing about it and this is why we encourage people to come out and watch them is looking to where our music Maori industry is going and the types of genre that these young kids are producing and putting out there. It's really exciting for the Maori music industry," she says.
He Huinga Whetu is at Piritahi Marae on Waiheke tonight, Te Hana near Wellsford on Wednesday, Manurewa Marae on Thursday and Te Mahurehure next Friday.
