Authentic voices to reveal Hohepa history
A slice of Maori history is set to be revealed through an oral history project aimed at catching memories of St Joseph’s Maori Girl’s College.
Old girls Stephanie Tibble and Celia Olsen have won a Ministry of Culture and Heritage oral history grant to interview at least 10 kaumatua associated with the Napier boarding school.
Ms Tibble says she has previously recorded the recollections of whanau members and she’s excited by what is revealed by with sound without pictures.
"When you’ve sat down and thought about the questions and are thinking about placing your questions in the context of history, so in this case it will be St Joe's history but also our country's history – slices of people's lives really illustrate those things for you," she says.
The project is set to be completed in time for St Joseph’s 150th anniversary next year.
