Good ideas get funding boost
The Education Minister is urging Maori teachers to tap into the Teacher-Led Innovation Fund.
The fund got an $8 million boost in the budget, meaning there is $18 million available out to the end of the decade.
Hekia Parata says most Maori children are in mainstream schools, so whatever fresh practices teachers come up with will affect Maori.
She says kaiako who are trying out new ideas should apply for a research scholarship.
"I’m told by those who have gotten them that the process has been really helpful even if they haven't been successful, because they get a panel of experts who give them feedback about the strengths or weaknesses of their proposition and we are interested for those who are successful how we then make them scaleable across the whole system," she says.
Hekia Parata says 40 projects have been approved so far, and the winner of the second round will be announced shortly.
