Cold night but good wairua in homeless protest

About 1000 people slept in their cars – by choice – last night at the Mangere town centre in an action to highlight the homeless crisis in the city.
They included Labour and Green MPs, but no Government MPs parked up their limousines.
Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says the first Park Up event, organised by three concerned locals through Facebook, was inspiring.
"Talking to a lot of the whanau there last night was fantastic, heaps of relations, plenty of the whanau bringing along tamarki, not the babies of course but tamariki to allow a lot of our kids to appreciate that there some people, worse off than themselves. Quite a good wairua last night, good conversation had with a lot of people and I look forward to supporting the one in Otara coming up," he says.
Peeni Henare says the protest was a reminder Matariki is a hard time for the vulnerable, especially the old and the young, because it gets cold and dark so early.
