Haka lives on in children’s book
A retelling by renowned author Patricia Grace of the story of Te Rauparaha’s haka Ka Mate has been chosen as a finalist for the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.
Haka, which is illustrated by Andrew Burdan, is up for the picture book award, and the te reo Maori version Whiti te Ra! is a finalist for Te Kura Pounamu and the Children’s Choice Awards.
Another Huia Publishers title, Tamanui te Kokako Morehu o Taranaki by Linley Wellington and Rebecca Beyer with illustrations by Andrew Burdan, is also a contender for Te Kura Pounamu and Children’s Choice.
A collaboration with New Plymouth’s Puke Ariki museum, it tells the tale of Tamanui, the last surviving kokako from the Taranaki bush, and the project to repatriate the near-extinct birds to the area.
The other Te Kura Pounamu finalist is Kat Merewether’s Te Hua Tuatahi a Kiwi, translated by Pania Papa.
