Tainui puts marae profiles on phone
The Waikato-Tainui tribal connection team wants information on the tribe’s marae to be no further than people’s phones.
It’s working with application developers Custard Square on an app that will eventually contain profiles of all 68 marae.
Project advisor Hone-Haunui Rapana says it’s one way to encourage people to connect to their marae, wherever they live.
" A big part of tribal connections and the sign posts we're trying to move is about people knowing their pepeha knowing their whakapa as well. They're unable to do that by being far away from their marae so those opportunities to talk with kaumatua is not available for those far away. The opportunity to go back to their marae and wananga with haukainga of their marae is not an option that is available to them," he says.
Hone-Haunui Rapana says the initial stage of the project will involve 15 marae, with the aim of getting a third of members to connect online.
