Tuhoe takes vision to Venice Biennale
Ngai Tuhoe will get the chance this month to share with the architecture world its vision of living sustainable buildings.
Along with architects from Jasmax, Tuhoe representatives will be at the Venice Architecture Biennale for two showings of the documentary Ever the Land.
Over two years director Sarah Grohnert and producer Alexander Behse recorded the building of the tribal administration centre Te Wharehou o Tuhoe at Taneatua, as well as some of the background negotiations which resulted in a settlement and apology from the crown for historic wrongs against the iwi.
Ever the Land will screen twice at the palazzo Querini Stampalia on the bienanale’s opening day, May 28, as part of New Zealand’s official exhibition, Future Islands.
New Zealand Institute of Architects’ chief executive Teena Hale Pennington says the biennale is the leading forum for discussions about architecture and its place in the culture of countries, which is why the film’s messages about caring for the land, respecting the environment and nurturing the community will resonate.
