Looser land supply not enough for Maori homeless
Cracks have emerged in Labour’s response to the Auckland housing crisis, with Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare dismissing housing spokesperson Phil Twyford’s call for Auckland to drop its urban growth boundary.
Mr Twyford says the boundary hasn't prevented sprawl, but it has helped drive up land and housing costs.
But Mr Henare told Radio Waatea land supply is only a small part of the picture, and will just compound problems caused by the current market-driven approach.
"When you free up land like that and you allow outside speculators to be involved or lead the development, that's where you'll see them maximise their profit. That's not a position that will help our whanau who are desperately in need," he says.
Peeni Henare says housing policies needs to focus on making homes affordable for people, rather than the current climate of speculation and financial engineering.
