Iwi deal example for other councils

The Local Government Commission has endorsed Gisborne District Council’s joint management agreement with Ngati Porou.
Commissioner Leigh Auton says it's one of a number of cutting edge initiatives coming from the unitary council.
The agreement enables Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou and the Council to jointly perform local authority functions and decision-making for all land and water within the Waiapu catchment area.
Another initiative, Tairawhiti Roads, manages both highways and local roads in the region as a single entity, allowing for more defined levels of service for maintenance operations.
The council is also investigating ways to simplify and streamline its Resource Management Act plans by integrating various regional and district planning requirements into a single plan.
