Auckland innovating in Maori tourism
Auckland Maori tourism operators are pitching their wares at the TRENZ tourism summit in Rotorua this week.
They include Ngai Tai-linked Te Haerenga, which offers guided walks on Rangitoto and Motutapu, Waka Quest Tours, which takes visitors to the islands by traditional Maori canoe, and Tamaki Hikoi, which includes a sunrise tour and a welcome at Orakei Marae.
Those looking for the darker side of Auckland can find it with Auckland Ghost Tours run by Te Oka Taia and his wife Jamie, while another tour company, TIME Unlimited, was the only winner from Australasia in the recent National Geographic World Legacy Awards.
Jason Hill from council promotional arm Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development says the city’s Maori tour operators are gaining momentum and national and international recognition which will be helped by exposure to more than 300 international travel and tourism buyers.
