Ngai Tahu cans culture centre plan

Ngai Tahu is putting housing its whanau ahead of offering tourists a taste of Maori culture.
It’s abandoning plans to build a cultural centre in the central business district, which was to be one of the anchor projects in the Christchurch rebuild.
Chief executive Arihia Bennett says whanau level recovery and social projects take a higher priority, like the scheme where quake-damaged houses were moved to its land in Addington and refurbished.
The iwi is also considering pulling out of the convention centre development.
