Deadline extended for Ngapuhi submissions

The Ngapuhi Hapu Engagement Group has extended the time for submissions on a way forward for the Northland tribe's treaty settlement negotiations.
The group, which involves both the Ngapuhi Runanga-backed Tuhoronuku, and its main opposition Te Kotahitanga o Nga Hapu Ngapuhi, has been working since December on a response to a Waitangi Tribunal report that identified problems with the way the crown gave Tuhoronuku a mandate to negotiate.
Its draft report released on April 1 proposed dropping the Tuhoronuku name, scrapping the seat held by the runanga as well as those for representatives of Maori living in cities, and allowing each hapu to come up with its own ways to appoint representatives.
Feedback on the draft must now be in by May 23, after which the group aims to have a final report out by June 3.
Submissions can be sent to ngapuhifeedback@justice.govt.nz.
