Watene whanau takes on the world
A Hutt Valley whanau is sending three of its kids to Canada this year in the hope they will bring home Taekwondo gold.
Five of the 14-strong New Zealand team for November’s world junior championships in Vancouver come from the Capital City club, and three of those come from the Watene whanau.
The oldest, 16-year-old Honestly, competed in the last worlds in Taiwan in 2014.
Her brother Max, who’s now 15, won gold in the 2014 Oceania championships in Sydney and the Australian open that year, while 16-year-old Cole won bronze and silver in his weight class.
Their father and trainer Kane Watene says it’s a popular sport with Maori, with many athletes attracted by the discipline they learn.
He says the whanau puts down a lot of hangi to raise funds for the trips.
