Minister praised wisdom of Solomon
Ngai Tahu leader Sir Mark Solomon has received high level support for his stand on sexual violence within his whanau.
In a speech to the Canterbury Men’s Centre, Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell referred to the conviction last month of Sir Mark’s cousin Tai Stirling on historic sex assault charges dating back to the 1970s and 80s.
He endorsed Sir Mark’s comment that acts of violence done to one person always reflect on the wider whanau, whether that be as perpetrators or survivors.
Mr Flavell says in urging people to speak up and stand together on a case that was so close to home, Sir Mark showed leadership, courage and strength in confronting the issues of violence that have traumatised communities for far too long.
He says there is no excuse for violence whether it’s in the institutions of the state or the institution of the family.
