Mahuki brings technology to storytelling

Te Papa has come up with a novel way of developing and sharing the next wave of technology that will be used to tell the nation’s stories.
Mahuki project manager Tui Te Hau says the museum is refreshing all its displays over the next five years, and it wants to continue the technology leadership it displayed when it launched in 1998.
The $1 million innovation hub is a residential programme where up to 10 teams of entrepreneurs develop the next generation of museum and display technology.
She says the teams will be based in Te Papa for four months starting in August, and the museum will help them develop products that can both be used internally and sold elsewhere.
One team place on Mahuki has been set aside for Maori entrepreneurs and she’s keen to get more on board.
