Kim Workman, Rethinking Crime and Punishment on Paakiwaha
The prison population is on target to reach 10,000 inmates more than half will be Maori.
He says historically Maori will more likely plead guilty more than non-Maori. Maori are less likely to have good representation.
He says it’s the systems that are weighted against the offender especially Maori. What we need he says, is a government to do a systemic review of those issues because what it is in fact, is institutional racism.
He says the United Nations in it’s last draft report 3 weeks ago have been asking time and time again for the last 10 years for the government to investigate the causes of and the issues of structural discrimination and the government has simply ignored that.
