Ngarimu scholars make contribution

Five of the country’s best young Maori scholars will be at parliament tonight to receive Ngarimu scholarships to help them complete their studies.
The scholarships named for Victoria Cross winner Te Moananui a Kiwa Ngarimu have been awarded for more than 70 years.
The funding pool has been boosted in recent years and there are now three undergraduate awards of $10,000 a year for up to five years, a $15,000 a year masters award and a $25,000 a year doctoral scholarship.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says it’s an event she looks forward to.
"Each year we see some stunning young Maori academics who are outstanding in the quality of the degrees they are doing, in their contribution back to their own whanau and hapu and iwi and of course their overall contribution to our nation." she says.
A guest at tonight’s ceremony will be the only living New Zealand Victoria Cross holder, Willie Apiata.
