Karanga and karakia open Kingitanga exhibition
Dawn in Mangere this morning was broken by karanga and karakia as an exhibition celebrating Kingitanga was opened and blessed.
Organiser Johnboy Nepia Kukutai says it features portraits of all the kings from Potatau Te Wherowhero to Tuheitia, as well as important events such as the Waikato Tainui raupatu settlement.
He says it's a chance for people to learn more about the people and events that have shaped the area.
"We're celebrating 159 years of the Kingitanga because we need to get out there and give it to the people, because a lot of that doesn't get told in south Auckland, and we'll start at our own back door which is Mangere," he says.
Johnboy Nepia Kukutai says after its two week school holiday run at the Mangere Arts Centre, the exhibition could go to other venues like the Manurewa Library.
