Voice of struggle in mayoral race
The latest entrant into the Auckland mayoral race says he wants to bring the perspective of some of the city’s struggling families to the contest.
Tyrone Raumati grew up around Hoani Waititi Marae in the west, and was inspired by the grassroots activism that went on there.
Of Ngati Whatua, Te Kawerau-a-Maki and Waikato descent, the 30-year-old has served on a range of community organisations including the Waitakere District health Board’s Maori Health Gain Advisory Committee, Auckland Maori Rugby and the National Maori Youth Council.
He says being on a Maori advisory panel for the old Waitakere City Council gave him an appreciation for local body politics and what can be achieved.
"I come from working with rangatahi, youth at risk, and witnessed first hand the struggles a lot of whanau go through and it kind of pushed me to be a part of that process and help people understand that it’s ok to stand up for what you’re passionate about," Mr Raumati says.
He says Auckland aspires to being one of the world’s most liveable cities, but for many whanau it is far from being that.
